Concerns after motorists lose control on Mayo roadway due to overnight black frost

Concerns have been raised over the dangerous condition of the Glenisland Road, Castlebar, following overnight black frost.

A video circulating on social media shows three cars having lost control and ending up in the ditch.

Thankfully, no serious injures have been reported.

However, Councillor Harry Barrett stated: "This morning could have ended very differently.

"Three separate cars left the road at Glenisland after skidding on black ice, and only for sheer luck there was no serious injury or loss of life.

"I have been contacted by local people who are badly shaken and who are saying clearly that this stretch of road has become a serious danger, even with the best efforts of Mayo County Council salting crews working since early hours.

"Residents have told me they fully recognise and appreciate the work being done by council staff in very difficult conditions.

"This is not about blaming workers on the ground. It is about the reality that black ice is unpredictable and unforgiving, and when a car leaves the road in this area the consequences can be severe.

"What is causing the greatest fear locally is the situation just nearby at Beltra Lake.

"Constituents have raised with me, again and again, that there are no safety barriers between the roadway and the lake.

"They are saying that if a car skids at that location, particularly in icy conditions, there is nothing to stop a vehicle going straight into the water.

"Parents, older residents and daily commuters into Castlebar are all making the same point. It is only a matter of time before there is a fatality if this is allowed to continue.

"As a councillor, I am now formally calling for safety barriers to be erected at Beltra Lake as a matter of urgency.

"Under the powers and responsibilities of the local authority for road safety and public protection, this is a preventative measure that can and should be taken before a tragedy occurs, not after one.

"People living and travelling in this area are not asking for the impossible. They are asking for common sense safety measures that reflect the known risks of this location, especially during winter weather events."

A number of complaints have also been raised with Councillor Barrett in respect of car parks in the town where elderly people were unable to get out of their vehicles because the surface was too icy.
