Status Yellow wind warning issued for Mayo and western counties

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow wind warning for Mayo and several other western and southern counties, with strong and gusty south-west winds forecast for Sunday evening.

The warning applies to Clare, Kerry, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo, and will be in effect from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Sunday, January 11.

According to the national forecaster, conditions will become increasingly windy during the afternoon and evening, with the potential for hazardous travel and disruption, particularly in coastal and exposed areas.

Possible impacts include wave overtopping along coastal stretches, loose objects being displaced, and fallen trees or branches, which could lead to localised power outages and difficult driving conditions.

Motorists are being urged to exercise caution, especially on open roads and routes prone to falling debris, while members of the public are advised to secure outdoor items ahead of the warning period.

The alert was issued by Met Éireann at 12.40 p.m. on Friday, and forecasters will continue to monitor conditions in the lead-up to the weekend.

Further updates will be provided should weather conditions worsen.
