Wild deer causing road safety issues in west Mayo community

THERE has been a significant increase in wild deer coming off the local hills onto roads throughout the Achill parish, including the Achill - Mulranny road and the Achill and Currane peninsula.

Over the past number of years, and particularly in recent months, this has led to a number of serious road traffic incidents, with cars badly damaged and, in some cases, people hospitalised.

As part of a fact-finding exercise to help address this growing road safety concern, Achill IFA is asking local people to share information on any car-deer collisions or near misses they have experienced on roads in the area.

They are seeking the approximate date, location, type of damage, and estimated cost of repairs where applicable, or details of near-miss incidents (where and when).

No names or personal details will be used. This is an incident numbers exercise, as all information will be treated anonymously and gathered solely to help build an accurate picture of the issue.
