Mayo SPCA welcomes €18,500 grant to support winter animal care
The Mayo SPCA has welcomed a €18,500 grant from Mayo County Council, funding that will help the charity meet rising operational costs during the winter months and ensure the continued care of vulnerable animals across the county.
The grant will support essential expenses at the shelter, including heating, veterinary care, food supplies, and critical maintenance, at a time when demand for animal welfare services remains high and costs continue to rise.
Marian Biesty of Mayo SPCA said the funding comes at a crucial time for the organisation.
“This year, the impact of rising costs means that every donation and every grant is vital,” she said. “We are currently caring for seven dogs at the shelter, as well as cats and kittens who have been abandoned and rely on us entirely for their care and wellbeing.”
Ms. Biesty said the winter period is particularly challenging for animal welfare charities, with increased heating costs and veterinary needs placing additional pressure on limited resources.
She expressed sincere gratitude to Mayo County Council for the support, noting that the funding will have a direct and meaningful impact on the charity’s ability to continue its work.
“The welfare of the animals in our care is always our priority, and this support will help ensure they are safe, warm, and properly cared for during the most difficult time of the year,” she added.
