Acclaimed children’s theatre show to visit Mayo this April

One of Ireland’s leading children’s theatre companies, Branar, has announced that its acclaimed production Story of a Day – Scéal Lae will come to Mayo as part of a nationwide tour.

The show will be performed at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Thursday, April 16, with the Mayo performance presented entirely in Irish.

Commissioned by Branar, Story of a Day – Scéal Lae is written by renowned children’s author and illustrator Mary Murphy and features an original score by award-winning composer Tom Lane.

The production combines storytelling, animation and live music to celebrate the magic found in everyday life.

The story follows a young boy, played by Eoin Ó Dubhghaill, from morning to bedtime as he encounters small wonders, big thoughts and the simple moments that shape a “nothing special happens kind of day”.

Through imagination and music, the ordinary is transformed into the extraordinary in a collaboration between Branar and MusicConnects.

The production enjoyed a limited premiere run in 2024 before going on to feature at the Galway International Arts Festival in 2025, as well as festivals in Canada. The upcoming tour marks the first time the show will travel to venues across Ireland.

Speaking about the production, Mary Murphy said the move from picture books to theatre was an exciting change.

“Tom Lane’s music and Eoin Ó Dubhghaill’s performance lifted the work in ways I couldn’t have imagined,” she said. “I hope children will immerse themselves in the show, meet themselves in it, and perhaps explore its themes by creating story and art for themselves.”

Marc Mac Lochlainn, Artistic Director of Branar, said the company is delighted to bring the show to Mayo during its 25th anniversary year. “The piece captures the wonder of how children experience the world – their imagination, their questions, and their ways of thinking and feeling,” he said.

“High-quality children’s theatre gives young audiences a chance to pause and reflect, to imagine, and to connect with others and with themselves. We want to share those experiences with children wherever they are.”

Story of a Day – Scéal Lae is suitable for children aged four and older and their families, with a running time of approximately 40 minutes.
