Moves to reopen iconic Mayo public house closed since 1989

The new owner of Cannon's Public House, Market Square, Castlebar, is preparing to reopen the premises which has been closed since 1989.

Notice has been issued to a sitting of the Castlebar Circuit Court on February 10 for a certificate to enable David McCormack, Westport Road, Castlebar, to receive a seven-day publican's licence in respect of the property.

This will pave the way for the rebirth of a pub that was popularly known as 'The Academy'.

The news is warmly welcomed in the community where Cannon's Bar has remains a beloved memory for many locals.

In its heyday, Cannon's Bar, run by the late Eddie and Hannah Cannon, was a cherished gathering place, known for its welcoming atmosphere and intellectual debates.

It was, according to local folklore, a popular meeting place for saints, scholars, political commentators, weather forecasters, poets, philosophers and football fanatics.

The pub was nicknamed ‘The Academy’ due to Eddie Cannon’s vast intellect and impressive library, making it a hub for lively discussions.

A member of an old and respected Castlebar family, Mr. McCormack, who has business interests in New York, is wished every success with his new venture.
