Appeal to Mayo dog owners as sheep worrying increases

AN appeal has been issued by the IFA about responsible dog ownership.

It comes after sheep worrying by dogs has increased in recent weeks.

The farmers' organisation has appealed to dog owners to take responsibility for your dogs and always know where they are at all times.

Owners are also reminded that when in public places, dogs must always be on a lead.

Heading into lambing season, it’s a critical time of year for farmers and dog owners need to ensure their pets are not on the loose on or near farmland.

Dog owners are fully liable for any damages caused to farmers and their livestock and dogs found on lands can be shot.

The IFA has repeatedly highlighted the damage dogs can inflict on flocks, launching its ‘No Dogs Allowed’ campaign back in 2021 to demand action to protect livestock.
