Coffee dock opening soon at popular Mayo lake

VISITORS to Lough Lannagh in Castlebar will soon be able to enjoy a coffee after their stroll or swim.

A trading licence has been awarded for the operation of a coffee dock at Lough Lannagh, Councillor Ger Deere has confirmed.

It will be operated by the Jalopy Bar, which first opened its hatch at Moneen Industrial Estate in Castlebar in November 2024.

The quaint coffee truck is a converted vintage Citroen HY van, which has built up quite a following, operated by Mark Munnelly and Wiebke Zuber.

It's the latest in a series of positive developments at the popular amenity.

Said Councillor Deere: “I have campaigned for a number of years to see this facility located at the lake, and following the introduction of the new trading bylaws adopted by Castlebar members last year, a suitable area was identified and developed.

“This will be a great addition to a wonderful amenity already enjoyed by hundreds of people every day.

“Lough Lannagh has become increasingly popular for water activities in recent years.”

He added: “Just before Christmas, we also received confirmation of funding for the installation of outdoor showers and lockers, and discussions are progressing with providers interested in operating saunas in the area.

“I’ve also received a commitment, after another long campaign, that a water station will be installed, and the second phase of the skate park will commence in the coming months.”

Councillor Deere wished the new coffee dock operator every success and encouraged everyone to support this fantastic addition to the lakeside.

He continued: “I’m very much looking forward to enjoying a coffee there in the coming weeks!”
