Community action day against Mercosur in Mayo

A day of national community action against Mercosur is taking place across the country today (Friday), including in Mayo.

Independent Ireland are urging people to contact TDs and senators - visit their offices or call them - to crank up pressure on the government to achieve a No vote in Europe in relation to the trade deal.

Mayo Independent Ireland Councillor Chris Maxwell has visited the constituency offices of Mayo's government Oireachtas members as part of a follow up Friday initiative to last Saturday's Athlone protest, which was attended by 25,000 people.

Councillor Maxwell said, no matter what party you support, please call them and ask them to make a phone call to the office of the Taoiseach or Tánaiste before 5 p.m. this Friday and ask them one simple question: Will they go to Strasbourg next Wednesday where 720 MEPS are meeting and speak directly with them, asking them to vote No to Mercosur.

Said Councillor Maxwell: “I visited constituency offices of government TDs and senators in Co. Mayo, and lobbied them for the Taoiseach and Tánaiste to go to Strasbourg next week and rally the MEPs to vote against the Mercosur deal.

“I hope as many people as possible from Mayo and further do the same tomorrow and over the weekend. The future of rural Ireland depends on us.”
