Mayo County Council launches housing focus information campaign
Mayo County Council is working towards delivering new social and affordable homes across the county this year, as part of its ongoing commitment to tackling housing needs in the county.
Currently Mayo County Council is on site in schemes in Lois na Circe, Castlebar, Abbeyquarter, Ballyhaunis, four separate schemes in Ballinrobe, and two schemes in Ballina.
An application for an affordable housing fund for an affordable housing scheme in Castlebar has also been submitted to the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
Last year saw major housing developments opened at Bog Gate Demesne in Westport (50 units), Murrveagh Close in Mulranny (16 units) and the award winning nine home development in Carnacon. Further schemes completed by the year end included units in Cross West, Ballyvary, Church Manor Ballina, and Lower Charles Street in Castlebar.

Mayo County Council provides a full range of housing services to the people of Mayo including social housing, traveller accommodation support, and working alongside approved voluntary housing bodies.
In 2025 Mayo County Council appointed a Gaeltacht vacant homes coordinator, who will play a key role in revitalising vacant and underused homes in Gaeltacht areas, supporting housing supply through refurbishment and redevelopment.
The council also provide Housing Assistance Payments (HAP) and the Rental Accommodation Scheme (RAS), with over 1,700 active households supported by the RAS and HAP schemes in the county at the end of December 2025.
Other housing supports offered by Mayo County Council include the processing of the Croí Cónaithe Grant process, with 696 applications approved under this scheme and 195 paid out to date.
Along with the provision of mobility aid grants, housing adaption grants for people with a disability and housing aid for older people grants are also available.
Under the Defective Concrete Block Scheme 434 applications have been approved under stage one and 270 under stage two of the scheme, with 130 properties completed.
Mayo County Council also offer the local authority home loan, which is available for people who are unable to obtain sufficient funding from commercial banks to purchase a home, and they also offer access to reconstruction home loans.
