Three Mayo teams progress in Connacht Women's Cup opening round
THREE Mayo teams progressed in the rescheduled Connacht Women's Cup first round games on Sunday – Westport United, Castlebar Town and Swinford FC.
For Ballina Town and Ballyglass FC, there was to be no joy for both on their travels to Castlerea and Boyle respectively.
Two first-half goals from Aoife Gannon set Westport up nicely as they won 3-0 against Colga FC.
It was a similar story back the road where Castlebar Town struck twice in the first half to see off the challenge of Kiltullagh Pioneers.
Swinford led 1-0 away to Shiven Rovers at half-time and put the game beyond their hosts in a five-minute spell when Bria McLoughlin (62 minutes) and Melissa Devanney (66 minutes) hit the net.
Ballina Town dug deep against Castlerea Celtic, who held a commanding 4-0 lead at half-time in their joust. Margaret Giblin and Kayla Salami got their names on the scoresheet in the second half but their hosts were to run out 7-2 victors.
For Ballyglass, their first foray in the cup had a bright start with Hannah Hughes netting in the 21st minute away to Boyle Celtic. However, their more experienced opposition were to win 4-1, second-half substitute Sinead O'Donohoe with a hat-trick to see her side progress.
