Big numbers out at Mayo mart
FOLLOWING the dangerous icy conditions of the previous weekend, last Saturday saw a carry over, with big numbers of stock out at Balla Mart. Three rings were in action again this week to spread the load.
There was a good selection of heavy continental bullocks weighing around 700kg selling for over €3,000 and they were in great demand from northern buyers.
Bullocks 300kg to 400kg averaged €4.67/kg, bullocks 400kg to 500kg averaged €4.08/kg, while stock 500kg plus averaged €4/kg.
Top prices in the bullocks included:
330kg CHX €2,050
425kg LMX €2,150
730kg CHX €3,290
805kg CHX €3,440
In the heifers, stores 300kg to 400kg averaged €4.44/kg, heifers 400kg to 500kg averaged €4.86/kg, and those 500kg plus averaged €4.66/kg.
The best of these heavier heifers were making more than the bullocks - €5 to €6/kg.
Tops in the heifers included:
285kg CHX €1,920 (€6.74/kg)
495kg LMX €3,220 (€6.51/kg)
525kg LMX €3,800 (€7.24/kg)
Dry cows 500kg plus averaged €3.34/kg.
A 13-year-old Limousin cow weighing 945kg made €3,860 for a farmer from Kilmeena, Westport - sold to a northern buyer.
The best in the springers was an in-calf red Limousin with its time up that made €4,650 for a Brickens, Claremorris, farmer.
There was a sale of bull weanlings following the bullocks in ring one. Bulls 200kg to 350kg averaged €5.57/kg, bulls 350kg to 450kg averaged €5.22/kg, while those weighing in at 450kg averaged €4.99/kg.
