Objections to proposed new Mayo McDonald's outlet
A NUMBER of objections have been raised to plans by McDonald's to build a new outlet in Claremorris.
The proposed site is on lands adjoining the Silverbridge Plaza and Shopping Centre on the Knock Road and it would include a drive-thru.
A planning application is currently before Mayo County Council, who sought further information from the company last month.
A number of public submissions raising concern have gone in to planners.
Local Councillor Richard Finn has spoken about the need to bring big brand names to Claremorris, having previously stated that it was a 'vote of confidence' in the town.
He has again reiterated his support by stating he doesn't want to see it held up, that they need these developments.
Four submissions raising concern about the proposed fastfood restaurant have been submitted to council planners.
Issues raised include increased traffic, noise, impact on residential parking, loitering, with people remaining at the premise's outdoor seating, along with bins and odour control.
The point was made that this is already a traffic congested area.
Concern was also raised that there are several local food and beverage establishments already operating in Claremorris town and they will be negatively impacted.
Another submission made the point that the site in question is less than 250 metres from the senior campus of Claremorris National School. Locating a fastfood restaurant specialising in ultra-processed food so close to a primary school would be detrimental to the health of young people.
It was suggested that the site would be better put to use as a public amenity with young in mind, such as a skatepark, with picnic benches and flowerbeds, or a sensory garden.
This would provide more facilities for older children and teenagers.
