Active travel funding blow for central Mayo community

RESIDENTS from Ardboley, Rathduff, Pollavaddy and the wider Balla community have raised concerns following confirmation that Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) has declined to approve the €615,000 in funding sought by Mayo County Council to progress the local active travel project in 2026.

Local residents have expressed disappointment at the setback, noting the extensive effort invested by community members throughout the design and public consultation stages.

They also highlighted the constructive working relationship with Mayo County Council to ensure local needs were reflected in the evolving plans.

In response to the concerns raised directly with him, Minister of State Alan Dillon has engaged with the Minister for Transport, TII and Mayo County Council to seek clarification on the decision-making process surrounding this year's active travel funding allocations. He has also indicated he will liaise with local councillors within the Castlebar Municipal District as part of these efforts.

Said Minister Dillon: “A priority now is to seek full clarity around how this funding decision was reached and what options remain available. Engagement with the relevant transport and funding agencies will continue so that the community’s concerns are clearly represented.

“This project is widely recognised as an important piece of local infrastructure, and every effort will be made to support its progression. Collaboration with Mayo County Council, national authorities and local representatives remains central to determining the next steps.”

He added: “Residents have contributed extensively to this project through consultation and design feedback, and their input has shaped its direction from the outset. Continued communication with the community will be prioritised as work continues to identify a pathway forward.”

Minister Dillon said he remains fully committed to advocating for the delivery of this crucial piece of infrastructure and has expressed his willingness to meet with residents at the earliest possible opportunity.
