Call to address safety issues at busy Mayo junction

WORKS are urgently needed to address serious safety issues at the junction at the top of Hawthorn Avenue, Lightfort, outside Castlebar.

Councillor Ger Deere has raised local concerns with Mayo County Council, asking for the issues to be addressed.

There are 20 households located on the road, which is a cul-de-sac, and all road users have to exit and enter at the one junction.

Residents have outlined to Councillor Deere that the surface at the junction offers no grip, particularly in wet and frosty conditions. Several accidents have occurred at the location in recent weeks.

There is also a major visibility issue while attempting to turn onto the busy Belcarra Road due to a wall and an overgrown hedge.

Councillor Deere has requested that council engineers would carry out works to address these serious issues as a matter of urgency.

He will be also raising the issue at next week's municipal meeting.
