File prepared for DPP over alleged theft from patient at Mayo hospital

Gardaí have confirmed that an investigation has been carried out following a complaint that a significant sum of money was stolen from an elderly patient at Mayo University Hospital.

A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The incident occurred last year when the patient had a sum of €1,200 in her handbag when admitted to the facility.

She had taken ill unexpectedly shortly after making a cash withdrawal from a local bank.

When she was being discharged from the hospital the following day, members of her family discovered the money had been taken and they were able to identify the staff member responsible.

The matter was immediately reported to the hospital and An Garda Siochána.

The patient's family is anxious that action is taken without delay to ensure that other patients do not suffer the same traumatic experience at the facility.

The matter is expected to be raised at the next meeting of the HSe West Forum.
