Progress made on Mayo athletic track management proposal

Progress is being made on appointing a new management committee for the running of the athletics track in Ballina.

Mayo County Council officials recently held a meeting with the main users of the facility – Ballina Athletics Club, Moy Valley Athletics Club and Ballina Cricket Club – where a number of issues were discussed.

The head of Ballina Municipal District, Declan Turnbull, said there will be further meetings with a view to forming a management committee in time.

Mr. Turnbull further highlighted that some upgrade work is needed at the facility and as much of that work is specialist in nature, it does not come cheap.

Subsequently, all potential sources of funding for the works are being looked at.

Councillor Jarlath Munnelly also attended the meeting and said everyone was on the same page.

Discussions were held over how the track can be managed and booked in future.

A management committee is 'crucial' and the right way to go, said Councillor Michael Loftus.
