New Garda Inspector welcomed to Mayo county town
Garda Inspector Shane Fitzmaurice has been given a warm welcome at his first appearance at Castlebar District Court since taking up his new role.
Mr. Gary Mulchrone welcomed Inspector Fitzmaurice on behalf of the Mayo Solicitors Bar Association, describing him as a very capable and talented officer, who served as a garda sergeant in Claremorris before being promoted.
He added that Inspector Fitzmaurice was returning to his home patch as he has strong Castlebar connections, having played for Castlebar Mitchels from underage right up to senior level
He also donned the jersey of Mayo for a period and played basketball for Castlebar, a sport in which he is still very much involved as an underage coach.
Mr. Mulchrone also noted that the name Fitzmaurice was not new to the garda station in Castlebar, as Inspector Fitzmaurice was son of well-known but now retired Garda Donal Fitzmaurice, who served the Castlebar area for over 20 years.
Judge Deirdre Gearty also joined in congratulating Inspector Fitzmaurice on his elevation to inspector and said she was in no doubt that he would maintain the high standards set by all members of An Garda Síochána in the Castlebar area and, indeed, in the county of Mayo.
The Court Services also welcomed Inspector Fitzmaurice and wished him well in his new post.
Inspector Fitzmaurice thanked those who were more than kind and warm in their welcome and said he was looking forward to his new position and would serve his community in maintaining the high standards of policing in the area.
