Mayo county town grieves passing of retired teacher and basketball coach
The death has taken place of Michael Denis O'Rourke (formerly Bro. Denis), Fermoy, Co. Cork. and formerly Shanagolden, Co. Limerick, Moyvane, Castlebar, Wicklow, Nigeria, Baile Mhuirne, Co. Cork, and Dublin.
A member of the De La Salle Order, the deceased was a widely popular member of the teaching staff at St. Gerald's College, Castlebar, for many years.
During his time in the county town, he made a huge contribution to the development of school and club basketball.
Michael (Miceál) died peacefully after a short illness in the presence of family members and in the exceptional care of the medical team in Cork University Hospital.
He was son of the late Elizabeth and Denis (Denny) and sibling of John J (deceased), Helen Whyte, Patricia (deceased), Tadhg (Gene), Vera (Carmody), Margaret Angela (McCormilla) (Deceased), Denis, Rose, Martin and Noel.
Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved family on their loss.
Many warm tributes have been paid to him on social media.
Funeral ceremonies took place in Fermoy at the weekend.
