Facile victory for Mayo ladies over visiting Wexford

Mayo proved too strong for Wexford in their meeting in Division 2 of the LGFA Lidl National League, winning on a scoreline of 5-14 to 0-7, writes Darragh Walsh.

Following a draw away to Cavan in the opening round of the league, Mayo were clearly keen to get their first win of the season in front of their home supporters in Swinford Amenity Park.

Once the opening goal went in, scored by Saoirse Delaney, there was no looking back by the hosts.

A second goal before the break by Aoife Staunton left Mayo in a commanding 2-5 to 0-2 lead, and Wexford were dealt a further blow when Grace Donovan was set for 10 minutes on the sideline as her high challenge on Ella Brennan resulted in her receiving a yellow card.

Further goals in the second half by Sinead Cafferkey and Maria Reilly (two) solidified Mayo's lead, and they were long since assured of victory before the full-time whistle.

The run of points after the break included Mayo's first two-pointer under the new rules for the 2026 season, scored by Sinead Walsh.
