MacHale Rovers set for north Mayo ‘Quid Games’ showdown

“It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye.” It may not be Ancient Rome, but there will be definite Colosseum vibes at the Great National Hotel on Saturday, February 7, when 30 local “gladiators” take to the stage for MacHale Rovers LGFA’s flagship fundraiser "The Quid Games."

Participants from Ardagh, Crossmolina, Lahardane and beyond will battle it out in a night of physical and mental challenges, with only one ultimate winner emerging by the end of the evening.

As the name suggests, The Quid Games is about gathering “a few quid” for the development of MacHale Rovers LGFA.

However, organisers say it has also been about three parishes coming together over the past six months to support the willing contestants and enjoy plenty of fun along the way.

The event is being led by organising committee members Pamela Walsh, Caroline Leonard, Niamh Lynn and Ruth Queenan.

This marks MacHale Rovers’ first major fundraiser, with the committee working tirelessly to recruit volunteers, secure sponsorship, organise lead-in events and plan the big Quid Games Night.

Organisers have paid tribute to the phenomenal support received from local and county-wide businesses, noting that the event simply would not be possible without their financial backing.

Community support has also been central to the build-up, with locals baking, quizzing, singing, dancing, cycling, tractoring, running bazaars and even begging, all in an effort to raise funds and cheer on their chosen contestant.

Tension is now building across Ardagh, Crossmolina and Lahardane, with organisers expecting nothing to be left on the stage on the night – particularly as contenders are eliminated and the competition heats up towards a dramatic finale between the two fittest competitors.

The audience will also play their part. At half-time, spectators will have the chance to buy back in their favourite contestant, with what organisers expect to be “desperate attempts” to land the €2,500 prize pot.

A raffle on the night will feature a host of prizes, including hotel stays, restaurant vouchers, wellness experiences and much more.

Entertainment will be provided by popular musician Paddy Garvin, in what organisers have suggested could rank among the “top ten best things about living in Mayo”.

Supporters are encouraged to come along on the night or donate via MacHale Rovers’ Instagram page. Tickets are available from Centra, Hineys, Mulherns Gala, Barrett’s of Lahardane, or online at clubspotevents.ie/clubs/machale-rovers-lgfa/
