Urgency of repairs to pier that serves two Mayo islands stressed
THE need to have Roonagh Pier in west Mayo repaired before the summer has again been stressed by locally based Councillor Chris Maxwell.
Structural issues arose with the outer section of the pier last October.
Seeking an update at a council municipal meeting, Councillor Maxwell said the EU will foot the bill but the repairs have to be done before next August.
It has to be done ahead of the upcoming tourism season, he said, stressing that the harbour is a lifeline for Clare Island and Inishturk.
It's February now and a job like that will take a bit of time, he added.
Councillor Maxwell was told an update will be sought from the head of marine, with council management understanding the urgency of the situation.
