East Mayo community's postal petition delivered to Tánaiste

A COMMUNITY petition demanding the retention of An Post's Ballyhaunis Delivery Service Unit has been delivered to the Tánaiste in Leinster House.

Just short of 4,000 people signed the petition in person or online, sending a clear message of opposition to the proposal.

Local Fine Gael Councillor Alma Gallagher made the trip to Leinster House yesterday to present the community's case to the proposed amalgamation of the Ballyhaunis Delivery Service Unit with Castlerea to Tánaiste Simon Harris.

Her arguments were backed by 2,547 written signatures and 836 online signatures - a total of 3,383 people voicing opposition to the amalgamation who demand to be heard.

Said Councillor Gallagher: “We are leaving no stone unturned in our fight for Ballyhaunis, and it's crucial that An Post listens to our concerns.”

She thanked Anne Cunnane in Ballyhaunis Chamber of Commerce for mobilising the petition and all who put their names on it, along with her fellow councillors, Oireachtas members, the Tánaiste and Senator Mark Duffy for their support.

“Together, we stand united in saying no to this amalgamation,” Councillor Gallagher pledged.
