Mayo's Printer siblings share the shelves with children's book

A brother and sister from Mayo are celebrating a shared literary milestone after seeing their children’s books stocked side by side in local bookshops.

Anne and Liam Printer, who grew up together in Mayo, may share a surname and a love of storytelling, but their books cater to different young audiences and tackle very different themes.

Still, both authors are delighted to see their work available in bookshops in Westport and Castlebar, bringing locally created children’s stories to local readers.

Anne Printer’s books are particularly popular with children aged two to six and focus on Irish native trees and biodiversity.

Her debut title, Ollen the Oak Tree, tells the story of an Irish oak who feels lonely despite living in a busy woodland, until the arrival of a new owl brings unexpected friendship.

The book was longlisted for last year’s CAP Awards and features on the Children’s Books of Mayo Map.

Her second book, Higgle the Holly Tree, was released in December.

It follows a baby hedgehog who ventures alone into the forest and soon discovers the importance of Higgle the Holly Tree in keeping safe.

Liam Printer’s debut book, Captain Super Sleep, draws inspiration from a challenge familiar to many new parents, sleepless nights.

The 24-page board book, aimed at children aged one to four, follows the character SuzZzie Dormir, who gains special powers the more she sleeps through the night.

Featuring bright, engaging illustrations, the book is designed to entertain young readers while gently promoting healthy sleep habits.

All of Anne and Liam Printer’s books are currently available in bookshops in Westport and Castlebar, offering families the chance to support local authors while discovering new stories for young children.
