Higher density 97-unit west Mayo housing project approved
WESTPORT is in line for a housing boost after planning permission was granted for 97 new homes.
Previously, an application for 81 units on the site at Carrowbaun was given the go-ahead by An Bord Pleanála. But now a revised proposal with increased density has been put forward by the developers and approved at council level.
The new proposal from Carrabaun Developments Limited comprises 97 residential units: 19 detached housing units (4-bed), 33 terraced housing units (2, 3 and 4-bed), nine own-door apartments (1 and 2-bed), 18 ground floor terraced own-door apartments (2-bed) and 18 own-door terraced duplex apartments (3-bed).
The development also features a creche and shell-space community building, along with new site access points (vehicular and pedestrian).
A submission to planners explained how following appraisal of the previously approved development, and specifically noting comments contained in An Coimisiún Pleanála’s inspector’s report, exploration of a higher density scheme in the region of 30 to 50 units per hectare was commenced.
Amendments from the previously approved scheme include increased density and also the creation of ‘own-door’ apartments.
A proposed new cycle/pedestrian route will provide greater permeability throughout the site, encouraging cycling and walking over car dependency, with improved connectivity to the existing local greenway network.
