West Mayo man fined €400 after pleading guilty to cannabis possession
A 23-year-old Newport man has been fined €400 after pleading guilty to possession of cannabis with a value of €165.80.
Ryan Horan, Doogary, Newport, appeared before Judge Vincent Deane at Castlebar District Court.
The court heard that Horan has one previous conviction for possession of cannabis, dating back to April 2, 2024, involving €10 worth of the drug. He also has two previous convictions, including one for unauthorised taking.
It was also noted that a suspended sentence of four months was in place but was not activated in this case.
Judge Deane said the offence carried a maximum fine of up to €1,000 as a Class D fine and noted it was the accused’s second conviction for cannabis possession.
Defence solicitor Mr. Dermot Morahan said his client had entered a plea to the substantive matter and that the offending occurred within a short window of time.
Mr. Morahan told the court that Horan had spent time in a rehabilitative centre in Navan and has been unemployed, currently living with his family in Newport, but is hoping to return to employment.
Judge Deane imposed a fine of €400.
