Guesthouse proposal for prominent Mayo property
A PROPERTY in a prominent location in Westport town is to get a new lease of life as a guesthouse.
A change of use from existing office use to residential guesthouse at Mount Browne House, on Distillery Road, opposite the Castlecourt Hotel, has been approved.
The property is a protected structure.
The change from a two-storey office building to a guesthouse involves the construction of new ensuite bedrooms, the provision of an open-plan kitchen and living area, and minor internal alterations.
A conservation report concluded that the works represent an appropriate balance between heritage conservation, building performance, and sustainable reuse - securing the continued life of Mount Browne House as a valued part of Westport’s built environment.
Sensitive conservation and reinstatement of domestic use will safeguard its authenticity and sustain its role in the evolving narrative of Westport’s heritage.
The report concluded: 'Mount Browne House remains a tangible expression of Westport’s 19th century evolution and of the enduring influence of the Browne family’s estate vision.
'The proposed works are guided by a clear conservation philosophy that balances heritage integrity, functionality, and long-term sustainability. Through careful repair, minimal intervention, and sensitive adaptation, the building will once again serve its original purpose - as a place for habitation and community life - while preserving its architectural character for future generations.'
