Minister Dillon welcomes progress on south Mayo wastewater plant upgrade

Minister of State Alan Dillon has welcomed confirmation from Uisce Éireann that the major upgrade of the Claremorris Wastewater Treatment Plant is continuing to advance on schedule.

The project, described as a key investment in the long-term development of Claremorris and the wider Mayo region, entered Stage 4 (Implementation) late last year, with construction works now progressing in line with the approved programme.

Current works include site establishment, early civil works and preparation for the installation of key process equipment.

Minister Dillon said modern wastewater infrastructure is essential to support future growth in the area, including new housing developments and business expansion, while also protecting local waterways.

“This upgrade will provide the capacity and resilience Claremorris needs for decades to come,” he said.

Construction and implementation works are expected to take 24 months. Commissioning and performance testing are planned to run from the third quarter of 2026 through to the first quarter of 2028, allowing for a phased transition into full operational capacity.

Overall contract completion is expected in early 2028.

Uisce Éireann has confirmed to Minister Dillon that the project is progressing to plan, noting that while risks such as weather, supply chain pressures and specialist equipment delivery remain, no material delays are currently anticipated.

“I welcome the strong progress to date and the clear commitment to delivering this project on time,” Minister Dillon added.

“I will continue to work closely with Uisce Éireann to ensure this vital upgrade is completed as scheduled, supporting the growth and environmental wellbeing of Claremorris and the wider region.”
