Mayo ace likely to be held back until championship – Moran

Mayo manager Andy Moran has indicated that star forward Tommy Conroy is unlikely to feature again in the remaining rounds of the Allianz National Football League as management prioritises having him fully fit for the championship.

Mayo suffered their first defeat of the league campaign today, losing out to Donegal, last year’s All-Ireland finalists, in a game where the Green and Red were also without a number of starting players.

Speaking after the loss, Moran confirmed that Conroy is carrying a minor injury and that management are taking a cautious approach given his previous fitness issues.

“Tommy's a tiny bit injured but again it's the exact same one as I said to you two weeks ago,” Moran said.

“It's just our hope for Tommy is that he plays Championship and our aim is to get him to the Championship and if we get him there we'll be very happy.”

Asked if Conroy could feature in Mayo’s remaining league fixtures, Moran suggested it was unlikely.

“So will we play him in the next two rounds of the league? I would say doubtful but we'll wait and see,” he said.

“Now if he's fit and he's ready to go we will, it's nothing major, but just with his injury history we're trying to wean him in a tiny bit.”

Mayo will look to bounce back next weekend when they travel to Clones to take on Monaghan, having opened their league campaign with two wins before the defeat to Donegal.
