Study into need for senior living villages in Mayo

MAYO County Council has been asked to conduct a feasibility study for the planning and development of a number of senior living villages in each municipal district in the county.

The villages would provide 'housing with care' - including both independent-living and assisted-living accommodation for older people, on-site medical care, wellness and social facilities, as well as public transport access, all within a safe and secure community.

Councillor Marie Therese Duffy, who brought the motion, said many constituents have approached her about this matter where they want to age safely and independently, with a strong sense of community.

She cited what Dr. Jerry Cowley has achieved in Mulranny.

Councillor Gerry Murray said a 36-unit scheme opened in Charlestown in the early '80s, beside the health centre and in the town core, and it has worked very well.

A scheme in Knock, with 60 houses and apartments, is a great asset to the community there, added Councillor Richard Finn.

And Councillor Donna Sheridan has raised the need for one in Castlebar to create secure communities for people as they age.

If the private sector picked up on this, it would be a very successful project, predicted Councillor Michael Burke.

It would work in every town and village, he said.

People want the security of a gated entrance and to have a neighbour.
