People in Mayo to benefit from changes to local authority mortgages
Minister of State Alan Dillon TD has welcomed significant changes to the Local Authority Home Loan and the Local Authority Purchase and Renovation Loan, which will make it easier for individuals and families in Mayo to buy their own home.
The Minister confirmed that the house price limit for Mayo County Council will increase from €275,000 to €310,000, ensuring that more homes across the county now fall within the eligibility criteria for State backed mortgages.
“These changes will provide real support to people in Mayo who are looking to buy a home but are struggling to secure sufficient finance from commercial lenders,” Minister Dillon said. “By increasing the property price ceilings and adjusting income thresholds, more individuals and families will now qualify for a Local Authority Loan.”
The Local Authority Home Loan was launched in January 2022, with the Purchase and Renovation Loan introduced in July 2024. Both schemes are designed to support first time buyers who cannot obtain adequate mortgage approval from banks.
“In Mayo, prospective buyers will now be able to purchase homes valued up to €310,000, which reflects the reality of the local housing market,” Minister Dillon continued. “This is a meaningful change that will help more people take that first step onto the property ladder.”
The Minister confirmed that the revised limits will take effect in Q2 2026.
“Increasing the property price ceilings and the single income limit will open the door to homeownership for many who have been locked out until now. I would strongly encourage people in Mayo who are considering buying a home to examine whether they may now qualify for the Local Authority Home Loan, or the Local Authority Purchase and Renovation Loan,” concluded Minister Dillon.
