All-Mayo colleges final goes way of St. Gerald's
St. Gerald’s College were crowned Mezzino Connacht GAA PPS Senior A football champions with a 1-19 to 3-7 win over St. Muredach's College in Bekan.
The Castlebar schoolboys started strongly, scoring five points without an answer from their Ballina opponents.
St. Muredach's kicked into gear thereafter, however, and by half-time had narrowed the deficit to three points, with the scoreboard reading 0-12 to 2-3.
The beginning of the second half saw a tense affair ensue, with both teams keeping the scoreboard ticking over.
However, the turning point in the second half came when St. Gerald’s were awarded a penalty which was confidently dispatched by Paul Hurst.
Despite the Ballina boys’ best efforts and a late goal from Conor Breslin, their opponents emerged victorious on a final scoreline of 1-19 to 3-7.
Forwards Evan Walsh and Joe Forry starred for St. Gerald’s, continuously making life difficult for the St. Muredach’s defence. Seán Foody scored two important goals for the Ballina side, while Alexander Smyth produced a fine performance at the other end of the pitch.
