Remembering Ann Kivlichan, pioneer in the field of Mayo animal welfare
Mayo SPCA was founded through the dedication, compassion, and determination of Ann Kivlichan, whose lifelong commitment to animal welfare laid the foundations for what would become one of Mayo’s most important animal protection organisations.
At a time when organised animal rescue services in the county were minimal, Ann recognised the urgent need for a structured, humane response to animal neglect, abandonment, and cruelty.
Through tireless voluntary effort, she established the early framework of Mayo SPCA, coordinating rescues, fostering, rehoming, and advocacy long before formal systems or widespread public support existed.
Ann’s work was practical and hands-on, driven by empathy rather than recognition.
She worked closely with a small number of trusted volunteers to ensure animals in distress were rescued, cared for, and given a second chance.
Much of the physical rescue work was carried out quietly and without publicity, reflecting the organisation’s early ethos of action over attention.
Under Ann’s guidance, Mayo SPCA grew from grassroots beginnings into a recognised animal welfare presence in the county.
Her influence shaped the organisation’s values of compassion, responsibility, and perseverance — values that continue to underpin its work today.
While many individuals contributed to Mayo SPCA over the years, its origins lie firmly in Ann Kivlichan’s vision and resolve.
Her legacy is reflected in every animal saved and every life improved through the organisation she founded.
