Use of sites to ease traffic woes on Mayo county town street queried
OWNERSHIP of a site on Spencer Street in Castlebar, which could possibly help alleviate traffic issues, has been queried.
It relates to a location beside Robinson's Garage, which was cleared of derelict buildings a number of years ago.
There are two issues, which were raised at a municipal district meeting.
One concerns buses at Davitt College and St. Joseph's Secondary School, with Councillor Blackie Gavin asking that parking be addressed in the overall general area as part of an upcoming Lawn Road development.
Councillor Ger Deere said some years ago there was talk of a road at the Spencer Street sites into St. Joseph's.
He was curious as to who owns the sites - council or a private individual - and if this was an option there.
There's also a difficulty with traffic navigating beyond Robinson's Garage as the road is too narrow, and perhaps parking on this site might help alleviate this, if they own them, he suggested, to take parked cars off the street.
Also on Spencer Street, he previously suggested that Bus Éireann be contacted to re-route away from this area and to go around the link road, and he wondered if there had been any response from the company.
Municipal head David Mellett said he will report back on the Spencer Street site and follow up on the bus diversion.
