East Mayo town announces grand marshals for 74th St. Patrick’s Day parade

THE Swinford St. Patrick’s Day parade committee has announced that three young musicians will lead the 74th annual parade as grand marshals, with the parade taking place on Tuesday, March 17, at 3 p.m.

The trio of Martin Woods, Conor Goldrick and John Greene were selected in recognition of their outstanding musical achievements at the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil and their continued dedication to keeping traditional Irish music alive.

This year’s parade will celebrate the theme 'Irish Myths, Legends and Folklore', promising a colourful spectacle of floats, music, costumes and entertainment as the parade makes its way through the streets of the town. A designated quiet street will also be introduced this year where parade noise will be kept to a minimum.

The town is preparing for a vibrant weekend of celebrations surrounding the parade, with a number of events planned in the days leading up to March 17.

Festivities will begin on Friday, March 13, with the official launch night and table quiz in The White House. On Saturday, March 14, the Michael Davitt Comhaltas branch will host Trad Trails throughout the town, bringing together talented local musicians, singers and dancers to perform in various pubs.

Chairperson Megan Durkan said the committee is looking forward to welcoming the community and visitors to the celebrations.

“We are delighted to celebrate the 74th Swinford St. Patrick’s Day parade and to recognise the fantastic musical achievements of our grand marshals, who represent the town at not only the Fleadh but at performances around the country,” she said.

“The parade and weekend events are all about bringing the community together, celebrating our traditions and creating a fun and welcoming atmosphere for families and visitors alike.

“We are also very much keeping the 75th anniversary of the parade in the back of our minds for next year.”

Organisers are encouraging community groups, businesses and individuals to take part in the parade, with all entries welcome. Live music from Swinford Comhaltas will take place on the main stage before the parade begins at 3 p.m.
