Mayo minor injuries unit to open in second quarter of 2026
The long-awaited Minor Injuries Unit in Ballina is set to open during the second quarter of 2026, according to confirmation received from the Health Service Executive.
Minister Dara Calleary said he was “delighted” to receive the update, which confirms that the unit will soon become operational.
The facility will operate seven days a week for 12 hours each day in line with the national model for Minor Injuries Units.
Minister Calleary said recruitment for the service is progressing, with interviews already conducted for a number of positions and letters of offer issued to successful candidates.
Panels are also currently being compiled as part of the staffing process.
Once operational, the unit will accept both GP referrals and self-referrals from patients.
The Minor Injuries Unit will provide treatment for a range of non-life-threatening conditions, including broken bones, cuts and soft tissue injuries.
The opening of the facility is expected to improve access to urgent but non-emergency care in north Mayo and help to ease pressure on emergency departments in the wider region.
