West Mayo safe routes to school project progressing
DETAILED design on a safe routes to school project for Brackloon National School in Westport can now move on after a report came before councillors at their monthly municipal district meeting.
It will address parking at the school, with the active travel team meeting with the parents committee and school to promote some behavioural changes, such as car sharing, reducing speed, and designated pick up and drop off points.
It is hoped to see construction on site next October or November.
Mayo County Council proposes to implement traffic calming measures at the L1822 Brackloon Road and Tawnynameeltoge Road as part of the scheme.
Located on a rural road with a 60km/h speed limit, the school currently lacks footpath or dedicated cycling infrastructure along its frontage or in the immediate vicinity.
Proposed works will focus on reducing vehicle speeds, enhancing the visibility of the school, and improving safety and access for cyclists, pedestrian and other venerable users.
It will also deliver improved cycling facilities and safer pedestrian connections to support active travel to and from the school.
And proposed traffic calming measures include pedestrian crossings, junction tightening, signage and road markings with all associated site works.
Pupils at the school had their say during the public consultation period, with the student council and Green Schools committee making a submission to the council.
They asked for a cycle and walking path along the L1822 from the junction with the N59 to help pupils get to and from school more safely.
They were also worried about the junction of the L1822 and the N59. At the moment it is very dangerous, especially for pupils who are cycling home and need to turn right.
Cars are hard to see and drivers may not notice children.
Their suggestions include some hedge cutting to improve visibility, and also school ahead warning lights on the N59.
