Appeal for Mayo doctor fighting for his life following Sligo crash in which his wife died
A fundraising campaign has been launched for a doctor who is in a critical condition at Sligo University Hospital (SUH) after undergoing surgery following a road traffic accident which claimed the life of his wife.
A gofundme page was set up by friends of Dr Farooq Hossain, a senior doctor attached to the emergency department of Letterkenny University Hospital and Mayo University Hospital.
The family were travelling along the main Sligo to Donegal road last Monday when their car left the road and crashed.
It is understood they were making their way home to Letterkenny from Castlebar at the time.
No other vehicle was involved.
Gardaí and emergency services responded to the incident, which occurred at approximately 3.30 a.m.
A female passenger, aged in her 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene. She has been named as Dr. Mahbuba Akhter, wife of Dr. Farooq Hossain.
Two of their sons were also in the vehicle at the time of the accident and both have been treated for non-life-threatening injuries at SUH.
The appeal stated: "As a colleague, friend, and beloved member of the community, Dr. Farooq has always been there for others in their time of need.
"Now, he and his family need our support more than ever.
"We are deeply saddened by the heartbreaking loss of his wife, who died in the accident.
"Their children were also in the car during the incident, adding to the immense trauma this family is enduring.
"Any support you can give will help ease some of the burdens facing the family during this profoundly painful time.
Dr. Farooq’s son, Adeeb Talha, has been added as the beneficiary to withdraw the funds on his behalf.
To date, a total of €44,883 has been raised and the target is €70,000.
