Funding boost for two Mayo parenting peer support projects
Minister of State Alan Dillon TD has welcomed new funding for two Mayo organisations under the 2026 Parent Peer Support Fund, recognising their vital role in supporting families and strengthening community wellbeing.
Erris Family and Community Support Centre in Belmullet and the Tacú Ballinrobe Family Resource Centre’s A Space of Our Own Club will each receive €2,500 to continue and expand peer led supports for parents across their communities.
Minister Dillon said: “I am delighted to see two outstanding Mayo organisations receiving this support. These projects make a real difference in the lives of parents by creating safe, welcoming spaces where families can share experiences, build confidence, and support one another. I want to commend the teams in Belmullet and Ballinrobe for their dedication to empowering parents and improving outcomes for children across Mayo.”
Parent peer support enables parents to connect with others who share similar experiences, whether raising a child with additional needs, navigating mental health challenges, or managing complex family circumstances. Research shows that parents often feel more at ease seeking guidance from peers, and that these initiatives help build resilience, reduce isolation, and promote positive parenting.
This year’s Supporting Parents, Parent Peer Support Fund has increased to €152,500, up from €100,000 last year, allowing 49 projects nationwide to receive grants of up to €5,000. Twelve projects will receive €5,000 to expand existing initiatives, while 37 projects, including the two Mayo groups, will receive €2,500 to continue or establish new peer support programmes.
The fund forms part of Supporting Parents – A National Model of Parenting Support Services, which aims to ensure all parents and carers feel confident and capable in their parenting role.
