Mayo minister welcomes opening of applications for CLÁR 2026

MINISTER of State Alan Dillon has welcomed the opening of applications for the 2026 CLÁR Programme, with €12 million now available to support community projects across designated rural areas.

The programme continues to play a central role in strengthening rural communities by funding local facilities, community transport supports, and initiatives on offshore islands.

Minister Dillon said: “CLÁR remains one of the most important supports for rural communities, providing targeted investment where it is needed most. This year’s €12 million allocation will help deliver new amenities, enhance community services, and support voluntary groups who are at the heart of rural life.

“I strongly encourage Mayo community groups to engage early with the application process.”

Three measures are now open for applications:

Measure 1 – community facilities and amenities funding is available for a wide range of community infrastructure, including sports facilities; youth clubs and teenage spaces; playgrounds and sensory gardens; walking tracks and outdoor amenities. New eligible items under Measure 1 this year include traffic safety measures linked to community facilities or events and initiatives aimed at reducing light pollution in rural areas.

Measure 2 – community transport supports funding for vehicles used by cancer care transport services; organisations supporting people with reduced mobility; community first responders; meals on wheels groups.

Measure 3 – Our Living Islands: Dedicated funding for offshore island communities under the government’s Our Living Islands initiative.

Minister Dillon added: “The CLÁR programme continues to deliver real, practical improvements for rural communities. I am particularly pleased to see continued support for Gaeltacht areas, with local authorities permitted to submit two additional applications for Gaeltacht-based projects under Measure 1. These investments help build stronger, more resilient communities across the west.”

HOW TO APPLY

Measure 1: Community groups should contact their local authority.

Measures 2 and 3: Organisations may apply directly to the department.

Capacity-building seminars for interested groups will take place on Wednesday, March 25, with registration available at clar@drcdg.gov.ie.

Minister Dillon concluded: “Clár continues to make a meaningful difference in rural Ireland. I look forward to working with local groups and Mayo County Council to ensure strong applications from across the county and to support projects that will have a lasting impact.”
