Mayo Young Sports Stars: Three teams that reached great heights

Three team awards will be presented in The Connaught Telegraph Mayo Young Sports Stars Awards 2025, which are taking place on Friday (March 13) in Breaffy House Resort, Castlebar.

The winners of the Male Team of the Year, Female Team of the Year and Eric O'Reilly Shield will all accept their awards on the evening.

The Male Team of the Year Award goes to the Castlebar Comets Under 16 boys (pictured above), who won an All-Ireland club basketball title in Gormanstown last April.

After capturing the Mayo Cup in style, they went on to represent their county at the two-day national championships, where they emerged winners in Division 2. A magnificent feat, it represented the club’s first All-Ireland title.

The Castlebar Town Under 14 girls will collect the award for the Female Team of the Year. The great success the club has enjoyed in women's and girls' soccer in recent times continued last year, with numerous titles captured by the club.

However, the Under 14 girls get this particular award as they were just untouchable in 2025, winning the league and cup double. The future of the club is in good hands if one is to judge by this amazing group of players.

Finally, the Eric O'Reilly Shield is being awarded to the Balla Secondary School Under 15 boys. In April 2025, the team brought great honour and glory to the county when they captured the FAI Schools Minor B National Cup – a remarkable achievement by an exceptional bunch of young players.
