Calleary presents unique gift to Canadian PM Mark Carney

Minister Dara Calleary presented Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney with a mounted Mayo GAA jersey during a meeting in Ottawa as part of St Patrick’s Day celebrations in Canada.

The north Mayo based Minister said it was an honour to meet the Canadian leader while attending the annual St Patrick's Day Festival in the north American capital.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has strong links to the county with both sets of his paternal grandparents hailing from Aille, Aughagower.

“I was honoured to meet Prime Minister Mark Carney during my visit to Ottawa for the St Patrick’s Day Festival,” Calleary said.

“Deeply proud of his Aughagower roots, it was my pleasure to present Prime Minister Carney with a mounted Mayo GAA jersey as we continue to embrace existing links and forge new relationships between Ireland and Canada.”

The gesture reflects the long-standing cultural and family ties between the Mayo and Canada, where many people of Mayo heritage have settled over generations.
