Man pleads guilty to causing death by dangerous driving of Mayo doctor

A man has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of a Mayo general practitioner in Ballinrobe in 2024.

Roman Klapper, of Pearse Terrace, Westport, pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared before Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court.

Dr. Martin Finnerty died after being struck by a vehicle on Chapel Lane, Ballinrobe on December 12, 2024.

The 69-year-old GP was out walking when the collision occurred.

Klapper, a Polish national, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death with his defence reserving their position on a second count to come before the court.

Senior counsel, Conall McCarthy, representing Klapper, said his client wished to formally apologise to the family of Dr Finnerty and express his condolences and remorse.

The barrister sought a probation report and psychological report for the man.

Judge Eoin Garavan adjourned the case for mention to June 29 next.
