Mayo swimmers plan River Shannon challenge in aid of children's hospice proposal
Members of Castlebar Swimming Club are set to collectively swim 360 kilometres - the length of the River Shannon - in one day in aid of charity.
The mammoth effort, which takes place on Saturday, May 16, will raise funds for the Sunflower Children’s Hospice.
The club is seeking to raise €20,000 by way of a gofundme page, 70% of which will go towards the charity.
The remaining 30% raised will be allocated to the continued development of youth sport within Castlebar Swimming Club, a fully volunteer-run community club.
A club spokesperson said: "Our priority is to make a meaningful contribution to the hospice while also sustaining a positive, healthy environment for local youth.
"Families in the west of Ireland currently face long journeys to access specialist children’s hospice care.
"The Sunflower Children’s Hospice aims to change that by bringing compassionate, child-centred support closer to home for families navigating the most difficult moments imaginable.
"Our swimmers wanted to do something meaningful — something that would show families across the west that our community stands with them.
"So they chose to swim the length of the Shannon in one day.
"Every metre they swim represents commitment, compassion and solidarity with children and families who need specialised care.
"This Swimathon is powered by community spirit — local families, businesses, volunteers, and supporters who believe in giving back.
"If you can, please donate and share this page widely.
"Together, we can turn every stroke into hope."
Up to 50 young swimmers will be involved in the challenge in replay format.
The swim will be staged at Lough Lannagh Swimming Pool, Castlebar, with the support of coaches, volunteers, families, and the wider community
