Mayo man (33) escapes jail term after found in possession of drugs for a third time
A man has escaped a jail term after being found in possession of drugs for a third time.
Jason Moran, aged 33, Corrimbla South, Ballina, pleaded guilty at the local district court to the offence.
The court heard that gardaí were on mobile patrol at the Killala Road in Ballina on June 6, 2025, when they received an automatic number plate registration (APNR) alert for Moran’s vehicle.
Gardaí spoke to him and got a smell of cannabis. The defendant handed over a small plastic bag containing cannabis, later valued at €91.40.
Moran has three previous convictions, including two for drug possession.
Solicitor Peter Loftus said his client works as a kitchen porter and supplied testimonials from his employer.
Moran was fully cooperative with the gardaí, handing over the drugs in his possession and eliminating the need for a search warrant.
His previous offences were over six years ago and "would be considered spent convictions".
Judge Vincent Deane said Moran had avoided garda attention for over six years but came to their attention when his car flashed up on their ANPR and now risked imprisonment.
However, the judge said he would not impose a jail term because Moran was holding down a job well.
“I’ve learned my lesson, Judge,” said Moran.
“I hope you have,” replied Judge Deane before imposing a fine of €400.
