Ghost estate the 'Taj Mahal of dereliction' in Mayo town
A GHOST estate in Castlebar has been described as 'the Taj Mahal of dereliction'.
The description was used to sum up The Waterways, on the Ballinrobe Road - a 77-unit development that has been sitting vacant for the last 20 years.
Councillor Harry Barrett had implored council management: “It has to be dealt with.”
Built during the Celtic Tiger, it remains vacant in the middle of a housing crisis. And while he appreciated it is a complex legal matter, he asked that everything be thrown at it and action taken.
It's a derelict site, and the council has powers, he pointed out.
