Mayo councillor wants grants for septic tanks extended
GRANTS to replace faulty septic tanks need to be extended.
And councils should have the jurisdiction to carry out an inspection if requested by householders who have an issue with their current waste water treatment system.
The request is going up to the Department of the Environment following a notice of motion by Councillor Damien Ryan, which was supported by his colleagues on Mayo County Council.
The south Mayo member said he receives many representations from people about inspecting defective treatment systems, in areas he considers 'red zone', close to water courses.
And while they cannot advocate a free for all, where they pose a threat there should be discretion built in whereby the council can inspect a percentage and people can avail of grants if condemned.
Councillor Johnny O'Malley said where a tank isn't working, grants should be readily available if we are serious about improving water quality.
