Mayo go to Westmeath with aim of keeping promotion hopes alive
Mayo will be aiming to keep their promotion hopes alive when they visit Westmeath in Division 2 of the LGFA Lidl National League on Sunday (March 22).
Diane O'Hora's charges lie in fourth position in the table, five points behind leaders Cavan and four off second-placed Donegal.
Tyrone, who occupy third, host Cavan tomorrow, while Donegal have a tricky trip to Tipperary to navigate.
Mayo will look to concentrate on their own job first and foremost and hope for favourable results elsewhere to still be in with a chance when the final round rolls around.
Several members of the Mayo panel were also in action in recent HEC finals, with a number of county and club players enjoying notable success.
Westmeath, meanwhile, are from bottom in the Division 2 table on three points and have big relegation worries to contend with.
Interestingly, Westmeath are now managed by Frank Browne, who was in charge of Mayo when Diane O'Hora played her final game of inter-county football. That was in the 2007 All-Ireland final defeat to Cork. Now they come face-to-face again, this time in opposite dugouts.
The game between Westmeath and Mayo at the Athlone GAA Club grounds throws in at 2 p.m., and it will be streamed live.
Mayo's starting team is as follows: L. Brennan; E. Ronayne, D. Caldwell, L. Wallace; C. Needham, L. Hanley, A. Geraghty; E. Murray, A. Kennedy; A. Staunton, S. Walsh, K. Doherty; S. Delaney, L. Cafferky, S. Cafferky.
The Westmeath line-up is: A. Temple; H. Keenan, T. Dillon, L. McCartan; C. Kelly Gonoud, F. Coyle, S. McWade; A. Jones, A. Ruane; V. Carr, C. Kilmurray, N. Mullarkey; K. Kilmurray, S. Dillon, L. McCartan.
