Man (70) stole from Mayo supermarket to feed his family, judge told

A 70-year-old man who stole groceries over a number of weeks to feed his family has been fined at Castlebar District Court.

Nithin Panchal of Bridge Street, Dunmore, Co. Galway, pleaded guilty to multiple theft charges arising from incidents at Aldi Ballyhaunis.

The court heard that the offences occurred over a four-week period, with the defendant entering the store on seven separate occasions.

Presenting evidence, Sergeant John O’Reilly said Panchal entered the shop with a trolley and placed items into an Aldi shopping bag, which were not declared at the till.

The total value of the goods taken amounted to €500.36, with none of the property recovered.

Defence solicitor Thomas J. Walsh said his client had brought €540 to court by way of compensation, which was accepted.

He outlined that Panchal, a native of India, had come to Ireland to assist his son following the death of his daughter-in-law from a brain tumour.

The court heard that he is married with three adult children and is not in receipt of any State support.

Mr. Walsh said financial pressures within the household had contributed to the offences, adding that the family has since taken full control of shopping arrangements.

Judge Vincent Deane described the case as “unusual”, noting that while the defendant said the items were taken to feed his family, this did not amount to a legal defence.

However, he acknowledged that Panchal had no previous convictions and said he did not expect to see him before the courts again.

Taking all factors into account, Judge Deane imposed a fine of €250, giving six months to pay, and took the remaining matters into consideration.
