Mayo's first Columbarium nears completion
MAYO'S first Columbarium is nearing completion.
The Columbarium wall, to host cremated remains, is being erected in Crossmolina Cemetery.
Local Councillor Michael Loftus has expressed his delight at seeing the project nearing completion.
He said: “This is a project that means a great deal to me personally, and to many families in our community. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Mayo County Council staff and the builder, whose dedication and hard work have brought us to this milestone.
“But above all, this achievement simply wouldn’t have been possible without the remarkable commitment of the Crossmolina Graveyard Committee. For years, they have cared for the resting place of our loved ones with genuine compassion and pride. Their tireless efforts, often carried out quietly and without fanfare, have not only maintained the graveyard to an award-winning standard but have also offered comfort and dignity to families like my own.”
The Columbarium - the first in the county - 'stands as a testament to the care, respect, and community spirit that the committee embodies'.
“I am deeply grateful to them - their work continues to make a real and lasting difference,” said Councillor Loftus.
A proposal for a Columbarium in Castlebar Cemetery is also progressing through the planning process.
